Does Topical Cream Soothe TMJ and Jaw Muscle Pain?

So, you have pain in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is the joint that moves your lower jaw and it is located near your ear.  TMJ disorder is a slow, painful failure of jaw joint function.

Maybe you have muscle pain in the muscle on the side of your face when you chew.  That may be the masseter muscle.  The masseter muscle is your primary chewing muscle and is located just behind your cheeks.  If you have pain in this area, it is easy to soothe and massage the masseter muscle.

There are, however, topical creams to apply to these areas for pain.  I believe that you would have to rub the creams in, therefore, creating a message for this area.

Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Company located in New Jersey developed a patch, SALONPAS®, relieving moderate joint and muscle pains.   The patch formulation contains 10% methyl salicylate and 3% l-menthol.  It was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of mild to moderate joint and muscle pain.  In the study, it was determined that the patch worked better than the placebo.  I could not, however, find if the study was ever done for TMJ disorders.

Mintiva is another product out there. Can't really see what's in it, but it is to temporary relieve minor pain arthritis, simple backache, muscle strains, sprains, bruises and cramps.  Don't quite understand the cramps as it may cause nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.  I guess you are supposed to massage it on the area of cramps.

Capsaicin cream was used in a study against a placebo and it was found that the .025% capsaicin topical cream produced no statistically significant influence on measured variables when compared to a placebo.  Capsaicin is an over the counter drug and is the principle pungent ingredient of red hot chili peppers, so it may cause a burning sensation to anything it touches.

An important advantage of the topical capsaicin approach is that this drug is poorly absorbed transdermally in humans and there appear to be few systemic adverse effects or even local effects...according to the Peripheral Neuropathy Unit at Imperial College London.
