Do Nicotine Lozenges and Nicotine Gum Stain Your Teeth?

nicotine lozenges, stain, nicotine gum

We are aware that cigarette smoking causes staining on teeth.  At the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology at the National Dental College and Hospital in India, they have done studies between smokers and non-smokers.  Greater probing depths, clinical attachment loss, and bone loss have all been reported in smokers.

Periodontal disease is related to the amount of tobacco

Several studies have been performed demonstrating that the severity of periodontal disease that seems to be related to the duration of tobacco use, smoking status, and amount of daily tobacco intake.

The American Cancer Society supports nicotine lozenges and gum, although there are a few side-effects.  Some other possible side-effects are bad taste, hiccups, nausea, jaw discomfort, racing heartbeat and nausea.  You cannot chew or swallow them.  The gum can stick to and damage dentures and dental work, cause throat irritation and cause mouth sores.

Nicotine lozenges are taken when they feel the craving

People use them when they feel the craving coming on.  For all of these products, people seem to stop smoking before they finish the box of lozenges. They work by providing nicotine to your body to decrease the withdrawal symptoms experienced when smoking is stopped and to reduce the urge to smoke.

Nicotine lozenges are a good way to stop smoking. You actually have to suck on them.  There are a quite a few brands out there and does not seem to be any reported side effects.  All of the studies point to nicotine lozenges increasing the abstinence of tobacco.  There are no studies indicating that the lozenges stain your teeth.

They don't seem to negatively effect oral health, however, I have only been able to find one study supporting this and it has to do with nicotine gum not nicotine lozenges.  That study was done by the Oral Health Services Research Centre at the University College Cork in Ireland.  The results support the efficacy of the tested nicotine replacement gum in stain reduction, in arresting the progression of tooth stain and in shade lightening.
