According to the NCBI, National Center for Biotechnology Information, martini's and scotch may increase plaque levels and significantly increase dental caries, gingival inflammation, soft tissue abnormalities, and tooth erosion were prevalent in patients undergoing treatment for alcohol use disorders. I could not find any information from the American Dental Society supporting the idea that alcohol increases plaque levels and dental caries.
What about Wine
Does a glass of wine a day reduce the risk of cancer? According the the ACS, American Cancer Society, wine is no different than those bloody mary's or long island ice tea's. In terms of cancer risk, it is the amount of alcohol, not the type of alcoholic drink that is important. Although, coffee, tea, soda, food and alcohol do not increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.
Flavonoids, the good stuff
It seems that the antioxidents in fruits and vegetables, called flavonoids, are believed to reduce the risk of cancer. Studies have found that people with diets high in flavonoids may have lower risk of breast, lung, pancreatic, and other types of cancer. Both red wine and grape juice contain flavonoids, which has been shown to lower your risk of clogged arteries and may help lower blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo clinic suggests that people who want the cardiovascular benefits of red wine without the alcohol should drink grape juice.
The ADA has its own intake on eating fruits and vegetables for the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease. The American Dental Association states that if you need a snack, choose nutritious foods such as raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese or a piece of fruit. This is nothing new, we have heard this for years. They do not seem to link any relationship of tooth decay and gum disease to wine, whether red or white. What the ADA does express a concern for, is the staining that red wine, grape juice and coffee do to teeth. A tasty polishing of the teeth during a cleaning appointment will remove the stain. An occasional refreshing of the teeth whitening procedure will keep your teeth clean and white.
