Does Grapefruit Help Reduce Dental Caries?

The Journal of Dental Research reported on a study on the benefit of drinking citrus fruit drinks in order to reduce dental bacteria in the mouth, which may in turn, reduce dental caries.

According to the Sage Journal of Dental Research, the addition of grapefruit to the daily diet produced a marked decrease in bacterial numbers in the oral flora.  The average bacterial count of the mouth was reduced by 47%  in test individuals after they had received 2 sections of grapefruit, 3 times a day for 1 month.  Monthly examinations of saliva showed that a reduction was maintained as long as individuals consumed grapefruit in addition to the daily diet.

All of this information provides the basis for Colgate mentioning on their website that 2-a-day grapefruit can be good for your gums.  The grapefruit reduced the bleeding of the gums if continued for two weeks.

However, there are drugs that interact negatively with grapefruit, according to the NCBI, National Center for Biotechnological Information. The BJCP, British Pharmacological Society says that grapefruit juice may increase the cholesterol-lowering effect, but also increase the risk of adverse effects of simvastatin. Simvastatin is marketed under the trade names Zocor, Simlup, Simcard, Simvacor, and others, as well as generically. It is used to control hypercholesterolemia, which is elevated cholesterol and to prevent cardiovascular disease. The Mayo Clinic also agrees that simvastatin should not be taken with large amounts of grapefruit juice or other grapefruit products because these may increase the concentrations of simvastatin in the body.

There are not many studies on grapefruit essential oil, but one study stood out.  The Division of Protein Metabolism at the Institute for Protein Research at Osaka University in Japan observed that olfactory stimulation with scent of grapefruit oil enhances sympathetic nerve activities and suppresses gastric vagal (parasympathetic) nerve activity, increases plasma glycerol concentration and body temperature, and decreases appetite.  This study was done with rats and that's the closest study I can find about the effects of grapefruit essential oils.

If you do believe that grapefruit essential oils effect people the same way as rats, a few oils are out there.
