There seems to be a controversy between toothpaste manufactures and a dental school in Brazil on whether sodium bicarbonate or baking soda (same thing) is really going to make a difference on the cleanliness of the enamel on your teeth.
I could not find any other dental schools that disputed this claim besides the University of São Paulo.
No difference in enamel when treated with baking soda toothpaste
A study by the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, showed no statistically significant difference between enamel treated with regular and sodium bicarbonate-based dentifrices, regardless of whether specimens were eroded or not.
Baking soda toothpaste removes tooth stains and whitens teeth
Church and Dwight Co. Inc., a major U.S. manufacturer of household products including AIM, Pepsodent, Close-up and Arm and Hammer toothpaste found that results show that baking soda toothpastes are relatively more effective in enhancing plaque removal from harder-to-reach areas of the dentition. Another study also done by Church and Dwight indicated that the Arm and Hammer whitening dentifrice tested in this study is effective for removing extrinsic tooth stain and whitening teeth.
Baking soda toothpaste enhances plaque removal
University Park Research Center, including Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools located in Fort Wayne, Indiana believed that little was done to confirm these results, so they performed their own study. They indeed found, that the clinical studies consistently demonstrate that Arm and Hammer baking soda dentifrices enhanced plaque removal effectiveness of tooth brushing to a significantly greater extent than the non-baking soda dentifrice products.
Baking soda rinse controls enamel surface loss
Again the School of Dentistry, University of Ribeirão Preto, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil challenged anther study and found that rinsing with a sodium bicarbonate solution after simulated endogenous erosive challenge controlled enamel surface loss but did not alter the microhardness of teeth.
There are a number of baking soda toothpastes out there. It looks like Arm and Hammer is not alone anymore.
