Heroin addiction is a serious health problem since there is a high tendency to relapse after periods of addiction. Fox News, states that heroin users are on the rise, increasing numbers of addicts are looking for help but are failing to find it — because there are no beds in packed facilities, treatment is hugely expensive and insurance companies won't pay for inpatient rehab.
Addiction
The Cleveland Clinic describes addiction as compulsions to use and abuse things to an excessive and destructive extent. The American Medical Association has determined that alcoholism and drug addiction are both recognized as diseases. It is generally known that compulsive use and relapse are associated with heroin craving which is very influential in the addiction process.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, heroin abuse is associated with a number of serious health conditions, including fatal overdose, spontaneous abortion, and infectious diseases like hepatitis and HIV. Chronic users may develop collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, constipation and gastrointestinal cramping, and liver or kidney disease.
Behavior
It is easy to blame others for all our problems and psychologists have argued that people have more control over their behavior than they seem to realize. Addiction is a behavior and behaviors have choices as cigarette smoking and over eating.
Almost all private health care policies include either partial or full coverage for substance abuse services allowing coverage of up to 30 days. The hospital cost can be around $30,000.
