Snoring may be an occasional problem, or it may be habitual.
Snoring seems physically harmless
A much more serious condition, caused by snoring, called sleep apnea may exist. Sleep apnea comes in two forms: obstructive sleep apnea, when the throat muscles relax and central sleep apnea, when your brain doesn't send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. When the airway completely collapses and blocks airflow into the lungs, sleep apnea occurs. A person then tries to breathe harder and the airway tightens. The obstruction of the airway persists until the the brain partially awakens the person. The closing of the jaw returns the tongue and throat to a normal position, which is done unconsciously. This sleep cycle can repeat itself over 50 times in an hour. This whole process can cause a lack of oxygen, which can trigger other health problems.
Medical sources note that sleep apnea can cause chronic sleepiness because of strokes, heartburn, insomnea, depression, high blood pressure, heart attacks and impotence.
There are several simple things that may help stop snoring, such as losing weight, avoiding alcohol, using a humidifier, and the use of nasal strips. Some people may need additional help and don't want to resort to surgical options. Snoring is easily treatable with a customized oral appliance that comes in many types and styles.
JADA, The Journal of the American Dental Association reports over 81% of the people in a clinical study evaluating a mouth device favored the device in the prevention of snoring. They used the device only on a short-term basis with the intention of using it for a continued period of time.
Moderate alcohol consumption significantly increases sleep apnea
Many types of medical procedures and devices have been used to reduce snoring. I would think that even a little alcohol would reduce snoring, maybe it would relax your throat muscles and even relax your whole body, so snoring would be reduced at least for the night. However, I am wrong. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has found that moderate to large quantities of alcohol consumption, significantly increases obstructive sleep apnea frequency. This is nothing new. Even an older study from the NCBI, found that alcohol increases the affect of snoring and sleep apnea.
