Will Adding Zinc To Our Diets Increase Our Vision?

Zinc deficiency has been identified as a global public health issue that significantly impacts developing countries, according to the NCBI, National Center of Biotechnology Information. For that reason the zinc and the impacts of deficiency have been extensively studied. Zinc is a trace element and some trace elements including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), molybdenum Mo), and boron (B) are essential to plant growth and are called micronutrients.

According to the NIH, National Institute of Health, high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its associated vision loss. Trace elements, such as zinc, are often used in agriculture and are used for the correction of deficiencies for crop production for products such as citrus and other fruit crops . So it sounds like, we could not get too much zinc. The USDA, United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library, recommends the daily allowance of zinc for women is 8 mg/day and for men is 14 mg/day. The tolerable upper intake per day is 40 mg.

It appears that there are a couple of denture creams with excessive zinc. Zinc concentrations ranging from about 17,000 to 34,000 mug/g were identified in Fixodent and Poli-Grip denture creams. This is particularly important because chronic excessive use of denture cream may result in hypocupremia (mental retardation) and serious neurologic disease., according to the Department of Neurology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.   A high use of denture cream would be because dentures are fitting poorly. If a person stops using denture cream and/or dentures are fitted properly, copper and zinc levels normalize.

Here are the material safety data sheets (msds) for all Fixodent brands from Proctor and Gamble. None of these, of powder or cream consistency, contain zinc, at least at this time. Also, here are the msds for Polident; gels, creams and tablets, from GlaxoSmithKline and also none of them contain zinc, at this time either. It appears that these companies removed zinc from their denture creams prior to 2005, before these msds were updated.
