A very common viral infection for people is the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are eight different herpes viruses that can infect people. Usually viruses only infect one particular type of cell.

It can also produce symptoms similar to infectious mononucleosis in people with a healthy immune system. Herpes viruses 6 and 7 cause a childhood infection called roseola infantum.
