Can Nitrous Be Given to Alzheimer's Patients?

Dementia is not a disease itself, but rather a group of symptoms that are caused by various diseases or conditions, according to WebMD.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia.  First affecting memory, judgment, and thinking, making it hard to take part in everyday life activities.

Dental care being one of those everyday life  activities

The U.S. National Institutes - National Institute on Aging says that people with dementia will respond best to a stable, familiar environment and an established routine. That familiar routine may be interrupted when a visit to the dentist becomes necessary.  For this reason, special dental care is required for patients with Alzheimer Disease.  The type of anesthesia is always a big concern and using general anesthesia is particularly a concern.

At the Service of Neurology, General Hospital of Vic in Barcelona has identified that the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease is greater among those over 85 years old, of the female gender and having been exposed to general anesthesia.  In May 2009, a Consensus Statement from the First International Workshop on Anesthetics and Alzheimer's Disease states that In adult wild-type rats and mice evidence from animal models suggests that inhaled anesthetic exposure increases pathology normally associated with Alzheimer’s disease.  I could find no articles or indications that nitrous oxide causes or affects people with Alzheimer's disease.

High Anxiety for dental care may require nitrous oxide

Sometimes there is high anxiety for dental treatment with Alzheimer's patients and in these situations, sedation by nitrous oxide appears to be a good alternative to general anesthesia.  Dental care with nitrous oxide has to be no longer than 30 minutes, and the less tiring for the patient as possible, according to information from the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Clermont University in France.

Further research is needed to confirm that vitamin B12 causes Alzheimer's, but it has been found that people with Alzheimer's have a deficiency of vitamin B12, according to the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry Department of Psychiatry at Eginition Hospital at the University of Athens Medical School.
