Do E-cigs or Electronic Cigarettes Contain Nicotine?

nicotine in electronic cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes or e-cigs (ecigs) are becoming increasingly popular because of the aerosol, comprised mostly of water, that is exhaled, although water is not what is in the e-cigs.  E-cig users are considered "Vapors."

According to the Division of Health Behavior Research, School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis MO, there is not much research done on these cigarettes to determine if there is a heath risk in using them.  So far the FDA has not become involved with e-cigs.

Therapeutic purposes makes a product a drug/device

In April 2011, the FDA stated that e-cigarettes and other products are not drugs/devices uness they are marketed for therapeutic purposes, but that products "made or derived from tobacco" can be regulated as "tobacco products" under the FD and C Act.

Currently, the FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) regulates
  • cigarettes,
  • cigarette tobacco,
  • roll-your-own tobacco
  • smokeless tobacco

E-Cigs contain the same chemical as in anti-freeze

According to an announcement by the FDA in 2009, e-cigarettes contain chemicals such as diethylene glycol, the same ingredient used in anti-freeze.  E-cigs also contain nicotine, just like cigarettes.  Public health experts have expressed concern that electronic cigarettes could increase nicotine addiction and tobacco use in young people.  The Mayo Clinic also states, that until more is known about the potential risks, the safe pay is to say no to electronic cigarettes.

To determine how much nicotine you are getting from an e-cig compared to a cigarette, a "puff topography" method is used.
