According to the Chiba City Health Center in Chiba Japan, of all oral health behaviors examined, toothbrushing frequency was the most predictive indicator of general health behavior. So what this means is of all the people studied, if you brush your teeth you have better general health. I figure everyone may not floss, but at least everyone brushes their teeth.
The behaviors that were studied were smoking, drinking, exercising, eating breakfast, and having medical check-ups. Notice exercise is one of the behaviors studied. Actually, it's funny to compare oral health behavior with lifestyle behavior, but even the ADA, American Dental Association says that lifestyle behaviors that promote oral health also decrease risks for chronic disease.
JADA, the Journal of the American Dental Association believes that people should improve their oral health behavior and they will get healthier. It has to do with human nature and a social psychological approach rather than actually brushing and flossing your teeth.
