What Are Oral Signs of Mononucleosis?




Mono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears. Because the virus can be spread through kissing, it has earned the nickname the "kissing disease, according to WebMD.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research says that the Oral signs of infectious mononucleosis, caused by Epstein-Barr virus, include sore throat, gingival bleeding, and multiple pinpoint-sized hemorrhagic spots (pettechiae) on the oral mucosaEpstein-Barr virus is a member of the herpes virus family and one of the most common human viruses.

Common symptoms of mononucleosis are drowsiness, fever, muscle aches, loss of appetite, sore throat and swollen lymph glands.  Most of the time, a person just needs to drink plenty of liquids and get plenty of rest to relieve the typical symptoms.

Persons with mononucleosis may be contagious while they have symptoms and for up to a few months afterwards. How long someone with the disease is contagious varies because the virus can live for several hours outside the body. Avoid kissing or sharing utensils if you or someone close to you has mono.

Epstein-Barr virus was discovered (over) 40 years ago from examining electron micrographs of cells cultured from Burkitt's lymphoma, a childhood tumour that is common in sub-Saharan Africa, where its unusual geographical distribution - which matches that of holoendemic malaria -indicated a viral aetiology.
