What Is The Best Way To Prevent Dental Caries In Infants?

Some dental problems occur very early in life.  Very early is before walking when a bottle is still used.  The Department of Dentistry, Royal Children's Hospital in Australia's findings indicate maternal factors influence bacterial acquisition, whereas colonization was mediated by oral health behaviours and practices and feeding habits.

A significant increase in caries prevalence was found in children accustomed to the practice of on-demand breast feeding and bottle feeding at night, mentioned by Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Manubhai Patel Dental College and Hospital in India.  Although this concept is not new to any dentist as it is known as baby bottle tooth decay now called early childhood caries (ECC).  Both milk and fruit juices constantly flooding the teeth can cause decay.

Washcloth teeth cleaning method works best for babies

Prevention is very important and so is infant home dental care which can include wiping the babies teeth with a washcloth to keep them clean. Putting fluoride toothpaste on the washcloth is very helpful.   If you don't want to use fluoride, a washcloth alone will work fine.  Results from the Department of Cariology and Endodontics, Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of Copenhagen reinforced the role of fluoride toothpaste as the most cost-effective home-care measure and semi-annual fluoride varnish applications as the best professional method for infants at risk.

If you have a special needs child or a very young child that does not accept the washcloth, spray toothpaste is a good idea.  Matter-of-fact, the Department of Dentistry at Ponta Grossa State University in Brazil says administration in spray form proved easier and was preferred by parents/caregivers.
