Everywhere you go, nowadays, you see a bottle of alcohol-based hand cleanser. Whether it be the grocery store, your work cafeteria, the hospital, the library and many other establishments have alcohol-based hand cleanser on the wall for your use.
Alcohol-based hand cleaners outperform soap and water
The results indicate that the alcohol-based hand cleanser dramatically outperforms the traditional hand washing agent in the general dental setting, according to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School.

There is another item, we need to be concerned with. Maybe I shouldn't call it an item, but rather call it bacteria. The Mayo Clinic states that clostridium difficile, often called C. difficile or C. diff, is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon.
Soap and water hand washing outperforms alcohol-based cleaners in removing C. difficile
Clostridium difficile was first described as a cause of diarrhea in 1978 and is now among the leading 3 hospital-acquired infections in the United States, states the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic. We love the convenience and ease of using alcohol-based hand cleanser, but according to the Department of Medicine at Sir Mortimer B. Davis-Jewish General Hospital at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec Canada, handwashing with soap and water showed the greatest efficacy in removing C. difficile and should be performed preferentially over the use of alcohol-based handrubs when contact with C. difficile is suspected or likely.

The Mayo Clinic also states that infections from C. difficile is an increasing problem with even young and healthy people. They warn that each year, more than a half million people get sick from C. difficile, and in recent years, C. difficile infections have become more frequent, severe and difficult to treat.
The University of Southern California, added some important information that needs to be understood. They say that although alcohol-based products are not as effective as Triclosan-based products, the advantage of ethyl alcohol over Triclosan lies in its ability to evaporate completely so that none of the chemical is present for the bacteria to adapt to. Therefore, resistance issues are nonexistent in the use of ethyl alcohol as an antibacterial.
