Does Shingles Show Up In The Mouth First?

Herpes Zoster, more commonly known as Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.  Cold sores are caused by the herpes simples virus.  Genital herpes is caused by the caused by the herpes simplex virus-2 or the herpes simplex virus-1, the virus usually responsible for cold sores.  The National Vaccine Information Center stipulates that Herpes Zoster is not caused by Herpes simplex Types 1 and 2 associated with cold sores and sexually transmitted genital herpes.

 

Herpes viruses are divided into three groups:

• herpes simplex virus type 1
• herpes simples virus type 2
• varicella-zoster virus

Childhood Asthma is significant in an increased risk of shingles

 

Even though I can't find anymore information other than what I write below about childhood asthma and shingles, the study takes into account a number of hospitals combining information.  This is where the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, the Department of Research at Olmsted Medical Center in Minnesota, the Virology Laboratory of the Children’s Hospital at the University of Iowa, the Department of Health Sciences Research at Mayo Clinic, the Department of Pediatrics of Gangneung Asan Hospital at University of Ulsan College of Medicine in South Korea together found that a history of asthma was significantly associated with an increased risk of Herpes Zoster in children.  The Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Mayo Clinic recognizes that asthma may be an unrecognized risk factor for reactivation of a non-airway-related latent infection such as Herpes Zoster in children.

Childhood HIV is NOT significant in an increased risk of shingles

Though many studies have been done in adult HIV patients, so far there are no case reports of childhood HIV patients acquiring zoster, according to information from Manipal College of Medical Sciences and Kasturba Medical College, both located in India.

Herpes zoster can occur at any age but most commonly affects the elderly population.  

The most common location for shingles is a band, called a dermatome, spanning one side of the trunk around the waistline. The second most common location is on one side of the face around the eye and on the forehead.  However, shingles can involve any part of the body.

Shingles has nothing to do with cold sores or genital herpes.
