Guar gum is used extensively in the food industry as a thickening, stabilizing and emulsifying agent. You have probably had plenty of guar gum if you’ve ever had ice cream or yogurt.

Guar powder, which is made out of guar seeds, has applications in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textile, paper, water treatment, hydro-seeding, carpet printing, and mosquito coils.  It is used to make cattle feed.  Believe it or not, but, Guar gum powder is used by world oil drilling companies to make specialist hydraulic drilling fluids for extracting shale gas.

Guar expands in the intestine leaving a sense of fullness

According to ADIS Drug Information Services in Auckland, New Zealand, Guar gum is a dietary fibre advocated for use in lowering serum total cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolaemia, which is high cholesterol in the blood.   WebMD also confirms that there is some interest in using guar gum for weight loss because it expands in the intestine, causing a sense of fullness. This may decrease appetite.

WebMD also states that Guar gum is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken with at least 8 ounces of liquid. The water is important because it reduces the chance of choking or developing a blockage in the intestine.

Guar lowers serum cholesterol levels and glucose levels

Herbal medicine is widely used in the treatment of diabetes.  The demand for guar gum is still growing rapidly because in addition to its indispensable role in lowering serum cholesterol and glucose levels, it is also considered helpful in weight loss programs states the Institute of Food Science and Technology, University of Agriculture in Pakistan

In a study using rats at the Mashad University of Medical Sciences in Iran, guar gum was able to significantly decrease the fasting blood glucose in comparison with diabetic controls, while the total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-C concentrations were diminished.

Guar provides fiber

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, states that there is no evidence in the available information on guar gum that demonstrates a hazard to the public when it is used at levels that are now current and in the manner now practiced.  Since, guar does provide fiber, an expert panel from the Federation of American Sciences for Experimental Biology, FASEB, recommended a daily intake of 20–35 g/day total dietary fiber from foods for the healthy, adult population of the USA.

The World Health Organization, WHO, study group has recommended a daily intake of about 37 g total dietary fiber.  Both of these were quoted in an article by the Pacific Northwest Research Institute at University of Washington, in Seattle.
